Musical Chairs Mailing List February 18, 1995 Vol. 1, No. 1, Issue 1 Circulation: 1 NEW ALBUM OUT! The first album by the new duo the Musical Chairs was just released on Tuesday, July 18. The release is titled "Watercolor" and features 70 minutes of music on high-quality chrome cassette and full-color cover. This is the first release by the band, formerly members of the underground group Paste. Dropping their third member, Keith Turausky, as he went off to college to pursue his musical endeavors in the Racketeers, the other two members, Lars Christensen and Russell Wiener have formed this new variant. "Some people will find similarities [between Paste and the Musical Chairs], probably, but there's maybe some more musical depth to this album and definitely some more advanced recording techniques were used," says Russell Wiener. The recording process was distinctly more professional this time. "My brother had an 8-track that we were able to use to capture all the new material on, which widened our horizons and sound quality quite noticeably, I think," says Lars Christensen. "Being able to master onto a digital tape [also of his brother's] was just the icing on the cake". The album features thirteen new compositions, mostly written over the last year. Many residents of Yavapai Hall last year may recognize the melodies as many of their practice hours were spent there. "We even did one song ["Echoes and Mirages"] at a dorm-sponsored talent-show," remembers Lars. The songs vary from the distant atmosperic strains of "Ghost Stories" to what one DJ called the "bluegrass-meets-Van Halen" sound of "Downstream." "'Downstream' was actually based on a theme I wrote a long time ago, but it never fit into anything by Paste and there was a perfect niche for it in this idea Russell had. The sound of this sort of song changes moods throughout, I think, which is something that was far less common during the Paste period, where most songs retained their mood throughout." This album was pressed by Lazarus Music and is now available at the low price of $6 each, plus $2 S&H for domestic orders (overseas, please write for rates). You can order by phone, mail, or email to: Lazarus Music 624 N Wilson Tucson, AZ 85719 USA (520) 318-4067 lac@u.arizona.edu or you can just buy them from the group in person.
